Please note: It is your insurance carrier, who determines the amount of deductible or applicable co-insurance owed, based on your plan, before your health plan begins to share the costs. That means, in some cases, depending on the amount of your unmet deductible at the time of the service, your insurance may also determine 100 percent of charge as “Patient’s responsibility”.
Coinsurance is a portion of the medical cost you pay after your deductible has been met. In those cases, your insurance may specify a portion of the payment as a patient's responsibility, depending on the percentage of your co-insurance. For example, if your coinsurance is 20%, you pay 20% of the cost of your covered medical bills and your plan would pay the remaining 80% of the cost. If your plan only has a copay, it is usually a flat rate fixed by your insurance company.
